Profoundly Impacting the Lives of Others

“Destination Graduation” was started by Dr. Jarmon upon her arrival at the Deerfield Beach Housing in May 2012. The program involves defraying the cost of cap and gown, yearbook and class rings for all public housing and Section 8 graduating seniors with a GPA of 2.0 and above. Dr. Jarmon uses this program to speak on the importance of education and building self-esteem among the program participants.

Background

Many of the women and children that reside in public housing can ill afford the cost of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the key milestone of high school graduation. Dr. Jarmon experienced this hardship personally when graduating from her high school in Conway, Arkansas many years ago and made a promise that if ever given the opportunity she would help others to not have to endure the embarrassment in being poor and of not having full access to the rich experience garnered from this important milestone in a student’s life and educational journey.

In fulfilling this promise Dr. Jarmon sponsors a full elaborate ceremony each year in which the women and children residing in public housing are afforded the opportunity to hear a very positive and motivational speech on the importance of this milestone and education in general and she funds the payment of the cap and gown, class rings, yearbooks.

The pursuit of education.

The pursuit of education has been a personal catalyst in Dr. Jarmon’s life and has been instrumental in providing a vehicle for her to overcome her poverty stricken upbringing in Conway, Arkansas. Her accomplishments through education have helped her to address the inherent issues that come with being an African-American female and single mother. Dr. Jarmon takes the opportunity through the “Destination Graduation” program to not only place emphasis on education but also on building a positive self-image and the importance of giving back.

When did the project/work begin?

Dr. Jarmon started the project immediately upon her arrival at the Deerfield Beach, FL housing authority in May 2012.
